March 25, 2024 - MSNBC, FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, INSTAGRAM: The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) Receives Massive $762,000 Donation from Founder William Islar to Finance First Year Operations.
William Islar worked countless hours making a name for himself in the government and the for-profit sectors, as a military member, aviator, executive leader, businessman, and educator. But what he's doing in the nonprofit world can be seen - by many accounts - as an even greater effort! On March 25, 2024, he presented Interim President Jayden Colbert with a massive $762,000 donation to fund The Single Mother Advancement Project’s (THESMAP’s) first year of operation. William is the organization’s Founder and Chairmen of the Board, and the donation has caught the attention of others in the nonprofit sector; particularly those that are tackling society's biggest challenges.
Leveraging his business acumen, William identified early in his career that while there were organizations that were successful at tackling economic or racial inequities, there wasn't an organization or infrastructure in place specifically challenging the marginalization of single mothers or any programs in place to explicitly empower single mothers, working to change policies, and giving to make lives better in the communities that needed it most. Furthermore, these programs give to promote and impose that organization’s solutions. William is not interested in promoting and imposing his personal solutions on single mothers; he gives because his interest is in empowering single mothers.
William's goal is to build a coalition that will replicate change at scale!
"Having worked in the government and for-profit sectors, I experienced marginalization firsthand, and not bringing social innovation to the communities that need it most - single mothers," William said. "Time and time again, innovative technologies and solutions are developed that solve the world’s greatest problems; and yet, the distribution of those ideas exclude single mothers."
“My vision of The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP),” William explained to PRC, “is that it is known for being an organization that acts in a manner, which empowers single mothers to choose the highest impact solutions to advance their family’s success." William also stated the donation is only "a pathway to prosperity for hundreds of thousands of single mothers" and “it will require multiyear public support to ensure the organization can create an ongoing measurable social impact and long-term sustainability.”
William’s original plan was to start the organization in his hometown of Tampa to tackle one problem within the city each year. "I started to envision, ‘Well, if we could do this for Tampa, we could do this in cities across the country.' And if we could do this in cities across the country, we would essentially create a sustainable empowering superhighway," William said. Quickly, his efforts proliferated - he returned to America’s political capital, Washington D.C. Within the next two years, he expects to have projects within seven major cities where his work is needed most. This would put the organization on track to "reach over a million single mothers, children, and families a year," William added. They are milestones within his ultimate goal of becoming "one of the most important poverty-fighting organizations in the entire country."
